Shield
The basic, Dragon, Jewel, Mirror, and Spiked Shield, as well as the Arctic Aegis, Friar's Buffer, Malevolent Maw, and Spectral Screen, are items. They share an item slot. (Consider all of them to be Shield variants.)
Usage[edit | edit source]
Any Shield[edit | edit source]
Passive Effect[edit | edit source]
- If you are alive and (Non-Holy) Hammer, Hammerhead Shark, Drunkard's Bar, Torch, Bo, Dildo, Sword, Demon Sword, Swordfish, Cutlass, Rapier, Katana, Serrated Shiv, Wooden Stake, Sanctified Stake, Lance, Slash, or Axe from Let Me Axe You Something!'s penalty is used to perform a melee attack on you, you block the attack, and you put the melee weapon on cooldown for 1 turn unless it is already on cooldown (or it no longer exists.)
- If you are alive and Tetsubo is used to perform a melee attack on you, the attack's effect is modified; instead of the normal effect, your Shield is destroyed, and you move back 4-6 spaces.
- If you are alive, all variants of Bow fail to affect you.
- Prevents death from the Deadly Pyramid's Burning Arrows; the Shield burns unless Fireproof.
- Increases chance of success when trying to slay The Dragon.
Notes[edit | edit source]
- See Melee-Triggered Effects for more information on effects like the 1st listed effect.
- To be clear, Serrated Shiv, Wooden Stake, Sanctified Stake, Slash do not gain an extra turn of cooldown due to the 1st effect as they will already be on cooldown.
- Shield does not protect against Holy Hammer, Jackhammer, Fish, Banana Fish, Ethereal Dagger, any Lightsaber, or Chainsaw.
- If Shield's passive effect activates against a Paladin who has a Jackhammer available for Auto Jackhammer while the Shield-holder has Shield Mastery, Shield Mastery triggers first. If the Paladin is successfully Incapacitated, their Auto Jackhammer doesn't activate.
- Shield Mastery won't trigger vs. Tetsubo.

Any non-basic Shield[edit | edit source]
Standard Use[edit | edit source]
- If your Shield is not currently raised: Raise your Shield.
- If your Shield is currently raised: Lower your Shield.
Notes[edit | edit source]
- Raising puts the Shield on cooldown. Lowering doesn't put a Shield on cooldown, but it cannot be done if a Shield is currently on cooldown.
- With Jewel Shield and Malevolent Maw, you can choose between raising/lowering and their specific effects.
- While dying lowers the Shield, being Dead does not prevent you from raising the Shield if you have Ethereal Gloves.
Passive Effect[edit | edit source]
- If your Shield is currently raised: Passively grants -2 Speed.
- If your Shield is currently raised: If you die, your Shield is lowered.
Notes[edit | edit source]
- See Death Tiers for more information on effects like the death-triggered Shield lowering.

- ACME Magnet; In addition to attracting the Shield, it has a chance to Incapacitate you.
Arctic Aegis[edit | edit source]
Passive Effect[edit | edit source]
- If your Shield is currently raised: Passively grants Algid Revenge and Frostfire Protection.
- Algid Revenge: After another player's (Holy) Hammer, Hammerhead Shark, Drunkard's Bar, Torch, Jackhammer, Fish, Banana Fish, Sword, Demon Sword, Swordfish, Wooden Stake, Sanctified Stake, Serrated Shiv, Ethereal Dagger, Chainsaw, non-Amethyst Lightsaber, or Axe from Let Me Axe You Something!'s penalty makes contact with you due to its melee attack, the weapon used to attack you gains 10 turns of Frozen.
- Frostfire Protection: If an item you have would be burned, it instead gains 5 turns of Frozen.
Notes[edit | edit source]
- See Melee-Triggered Effects for more information on effects like Algid Revenge.
- If you are killed by Ethereal Dagger's melee attack and your Shield is lowered, Algid Revenge still triggers.
- If the Shield is destroyed by Jackhammer's or Chainsaw's melee attack, Algid Revenge still activates (except in the case of Auto Jackhammer; this case is likely a bug.) However, it won't activate against a Tetsubo that destroys it.
- Algid Revenge does trigger due to Slash, Torch, and Axe from Let Me Axe You Something!'s penalty, but it fails to do anything for any of them; Axe doesn't exist in item form, Torch is Frostproof, and Slash is a skill. It also triggers due to a Swordfish or Sword with 1 remaining charge despite not having an existing item to act on.
- Frostfire Protection will still activate if you have Frost Immunity or if the would-be-burnt item is Frostproof; the item is not burnt or Frozen.
- Frostfire Protection will activate if a Frozen item is chosen for a burning effect such as with Fire or Laser; technically, the Frozen status normally triggers to remove itself and stop such a burn, though Frostfire Protection triggers faster, and as such it will prevent Frozen from triggering to remove itself. However, Frostfire Protection will NOT activate if a Frozen item is chosen for Volatile Oil or Specter Downie; when choosing a Frozen item, these items are deliberately coded not to burn but rather to thaw, meaning Frozen's trigger is not involved at all.
