From Board Game Online Wiki

Ranger is a class which can be unlocked via the Pawn Tree of the Levelling System.

Passive[edit | edit source]

Beast Mastery[edit | edit source]

Tooltip
All your Living items become Soulbound as soon as you get them. You can always use them.

If the Class Talent is active: Whenever a Living item in your inventory gets used up or destroyed, you move 6 spaces forward. Cooldown: 1 turn

Category: Buff

Effect[edit | edit source]

  • Living items gain the Soulbound Enchantment when they enter your inventory.
  • Being Dead, Incapacitated, Disarmed, Reincarnated, Petrified, or Hypnotized does not prevent you from using a Living item. Also, the Ethereal enchantment won't stop you from using a Living item.
  • If the Class Talent is active: You move 6 spaces forward if a Living item in your inventory is used up or destroyed provided Beast Mastery is off cooldown.
Notes[edit | edit source]
  • If you use Mustache Of Life on an item, it won't suddenly become Soulbound, though it will become Soulbound if it then transforms into another item. (This won't occur with a subtype change.)
  • If the Soulbound enchantment is removed from a Living item (e.g. by Scintillating Spellstone or Queen Alexandra's Birdwing), it won't suddenly become Soulbound again.
  • You cannot use Living items while Blinded or use a Frozen Living item.

Skills[edit | edit source]

Feign Death[edit | edit source]

Feign Death
In-Game Description
Tooltip Pretend to die, causing you to become dead without triggering any effects that trigger upon death.

Using this skill a second time or waiting until the start of your next turn will cause you to revive without triggering any effects that trigger upon revival.

If the Class Talent is active: Kills made while feigning death reset the cooldowns of your Ranger skills and your Living items. This also cancels Feign Death.

Secret Item Interaction[edit | edit source]

This is one of the secrets of BGO.

Spoilers
You have a 50% chance to attract a Rat when using The Pied Piper's Pipe.

Playstyle[edit | edit source]

Strengths[edit | edit source]

  • Beast Mastery prevents being completely shut down by death or Incapacitation or even by Disarm & Polymorph.
  • Tracking can net a lot of spaces if the target is ahead of you and moving a lot.
  • Crossroads has lots of strong options; some of these aren't available with Wildcard: Shops, such as The Abandoned Mine, The Jungle, and The Wild West. And The Pyramid is a particularly intriguing option given how you can use Feign Death to escape death if you fail to escape with the Treasure.
  • Pack Leader's access to the Living item pool is noteworthy. And the ability to reduce Living items' cooldowns is quite strong for a select few items.
  • Feign Death is useful for dodging death and Incapacitation and for removing Skip-A-Turn.
  • Animal Rescue, The Pied Piper's Pipe, Lure Whistle, and ICE-Bot will not be able to steal your Living items as they will be Soulbound.

Weaknesses[edit | edit source]

  • Sphere Of Annihilation, Deadly Virus, and Glitch Glock can destroy or transform your Living items.
  • Cannot dispose of junk items (outside of Living items like Creeping Fungus while you have the Pack Leader Talent.)
  • No direct movement of you or other players (except arguably Tracking's movement) without Talents; dependent on items from Crossroads and Pack Leader.
  • Beast Mastery's instant Soulbinding will prevent you from selling your Living items to the Pawn Shop, prevent disposing of items like Creeping Fungus and Weeping Angel with a Raven, and make all of your Living items vulnerable to Trickster Fairy.
  • Tracking's movement will often be outside of your control (because the target's movement will be outside of your control.)
  • Crossroads's event pool is large enough that queuing it with 1 specific event in mind will usually result in failure.
  • Pack Leader's choice of 2 random Living items to summon isn't reset if you use the skill for another purpose, meaning that if you want to re-roll for strong Living items, you may be forced to summon a weak or even harmful Living item and put the skill on cooldown for a long time.
  • Feign Death will not remove harmful Debuffs like Diseases or trigger helpful Buffs like Life Insurance.
  • Outside of removing Skip-A-Turn and responding to something like Pipe Bomb, Feign Death requires you to be proactive rather than reactive.

Strategies[edit | edit source]

  • Be on the lookout for Hellpriest as Beast Mastery allows using it to revive. Seal can also send you to the Church for Disarm removal if it happens to be in its current event list. (Beware that Bramble Barrier cannot remove an already existing Incapacitation.)
  • Use things like Space Capacitator, Snowballs, and Watermelon Seed Salvo to rack up spaces while Tracking. Debuffs like Fire, Syphilis, Chlamydia, Common Cold, Corona, Curse Of Relativity, and Curse Of The Pharaoh are other things to look out for.
  • As mentioned above, some strong Crossroads events are not available through Wildcard: Shops; as such, they should often be prioritized. The Abandoned Mine, The Jungle, and The Wild West are particularly strong. And, as mentioned above, The Pyramid is a particularly intriguing option given how you can use Feign Death to escape death if you fail to escape with the Treasure.
  • Seal, Courier Flap, Odd Todd's Frog Clogs (from Tree Frog), Pegasus, One-Trick Pony, Kangaroo, Holly's Thicc Booty, Doge, Black Dragonling, Freakachu, and Fridge Fairy are premium inherently Living items for use with Pack Leader's cooldown reduction (or for Pack Leader's creation.)
  • Funereal Dusky-Wing Butterfly is often the strongest option if you get a Caterpillar since you will be able to use it every turn while alive.
  • Beast Mastery's Soulbound enchantments can really rack up for Scintillating Spellstone or Queen Alexandra's Birdwing. Supposing you remove the Soulbound enchantments with these, you can reapply them with a non-player inventory like the Pawn Shop. (But beware that the Pawn Shop owner kicks you out if you reject 3 appraisals.) And, of course, if you remove the Soulbound enchantments, you'll finally have the option to sell your Living items.
  • Feign Death can prevent harmful effects from Archaeology Dig failure, Russian Roulette, The United Nations, The Bear! (esp. if you try to kill the Bear but fail), Angry Dragon, Saruman, Loan Shark, Diss Card: Death, and Guns. You can also dodge death due to Terrorists! Inside The Cave, Ninja Hirelings's Assassins, Jumanji's Van Pelt, Deaf Genie, and The Wheel Of Fuckery (or dodge Polymorph from the Wheel.) And Feigning is also quite useful if you want to launch yourself with a Catapult but don't have any protection.
  • During Halloween, you can use Feign Death in the Graveyard to find out who killed the Baron.
  • If the Adventure Time reference event is chosen, Feign Death can be used to avoid penalty from failing in the Dungeon Crawl or to prevent being scared backwards by Marceline.
  • If the Dr. Who reference event is chosen, Catapult in the Arcane Portal has synergy with Feign Death. Every type of Quest Gem from the Middle Ages can be more easily completed with Ranger skills. And if another player captures and releases a T-Rex from the Prehistory, Feign Death can dodge death from it (for a bit.)
  • If the Board Game Of Thrones reference event is chosen, access to the Bear and Dragon with Baratheon and access to The Dragon with Targaryen has potential synergy with Feign Death; with The Dragon, you can feed it a Sheep to potentially kill it and Feign if you fail to kill it, and you can similarly Feign after failing to kill the Bear with your Sword. (Note that you can't Feign if you try to kill The Dragon with a Sword.) Stark has access to Wolf, while Targaryen has access to Dragonlings; each can have their cooldowns lowered by Pack Leader. Stark has access to Snowballs for use with Tracking. And, during the Summer, Targaryen can go to the beach, potentially water ski, and avoid death with Feign Death if there's no lifeguard; afterward, you can also end Feigning Death to fish up a Loan Shark if you have a Fishing Pole.
  • If the Interdimensional Portal Gun reference event is chosen, Doge World has the option to gain Tasty Treats for use with your Living items; there's also an opportunity to gain a Doge that can have its cooldown lowered by Pack Leader, though beware that Feign Death won't be useful for this. Cronenberg World's laboratories lets you re-roll if you aren't satisfied with your current Living items, while the streets have potential to net you a Courier Flap that has synergy with Pack Leader. Various birds on Bird World can have their cooldowns lowered by Pack Leader.
  • Tractor Gloves are a solid option for triggering the Tracking Talent.
  • Hammer Of Hephaestus, The Pied Piper's Pipe, and Baetylus have strong synergy with this class. You may also be able to rack up a large amount of Earthshaker's Fury stacks from Poseidon's Trident by Tracking a player behind you.
  • There are some infinite loops involving Pack Leader:
  • The Juicer Loop
  • 1. Jewelizer
  • 2. Jewel Juicer
  • 3. Kronos' Sickle (with variant other item/skill uses, ideally including a Wealth Staff or Lock Time or Concoct+Transmute to completely counter the Rupee loss from Jewelizer, and something like Call Demon to counter the item loss)
  • 4. Use Pack Leader on Living Jewel Juicer.
  • 5. Repeat steps 1-4 as many times as you want or until you go broke or until you run out of items.
  • The Man Of The Wild Talent/Energize Staff Loop
  • 1. Energize Staff
  • 2. Shapeshift with Man Of The Wild Talent to reduce Living Energize Staff's cooldown by 3.
  • 3. Use Pack Leader on Living Energize Staff and use any other skills you want, such as Crow Form: Soar.
  • 4. Repeat steps 1-3 as many times as you want.
  • The Lotus/Sickle Loop
  • 1. Eat Black Lotus.
  • 2. Use Kronos' Sickle and then use other items/skills until you have at most 4 other items/skills on cooldown.
  • 3. Use Pack Leader on Living Kronos' Sickle.
  • 4. Repeat steps 2 & 3 as many times as you want until Black Lotus wears off.
  • The Lotus/Energize Staff loop
  • 1. Eat Black Lotus.
  • 2. Energize Staff
  • 3. Use Pack Leader on Living Energize Staff and use any other skills you want.
  • 4. Repeat steps 2 & 3 as many times as you want until Black Lotus wears off.
  • The Enchanter/Priest Warlock Energize Staff loop
  • 1. Energize Staff
  • 2. Call Demon OR Ring Of Fire w/Talent
  • 3. Condense Magic (potentially used on a Demon or Ring)/Radiance
  • 4. Harvest Power
  • 5. Chaotic Energy on Energize Staff
  • 6. Use Pack Leader on Living Energize Staff and use any other skills you want.
  • 7. Repeat steps 1-6 as many times as you want.
  • The Feign Death Talent has a loop with Brahmastra (or a Duplicate Staff) that allows for an unlimited amount of kills without requiring an Effects Phase.
  • 1. Feign Death
  • 2. Living Brahmastra (or Death Staff) to trigger Feign Death Talent, resetting all of your Living item cooldowns.
  • 3. Living Energize Staff

Dual-Class Synergies[edit | edit source]

-cubus[edit | edit source]

  • Tracking's Crossroads grants more opportunities for The Brothel and The Pirate Ship.
  • Tracking's Crossroads grants more opportunities for attempting The Pyramid, with Ethereal Gloves being used to revive you if you die (until you are out of revives, at which point you can Feign Death.)
  • Pack Leader can summon a Living item to be sacrificed for Sexual Ritual. Beast Mastery Talent can activate due to the sacrifice.
  • Feign Death can be used to use Ethereal Dagger or to use an item like ACME Rocket while Dead with Ethereal Gloves, which can trigger the Feign Death Talent.

Alchemist[edit | edit source]

  • Supposing you gain a Cow (or Goat), it will become Soulbound, such that Tractor Beam, Lure Whistle, etc. cannot steal it. Additionally, Pack Leader can be used to reduce the cooldown of Cow (or Goat); this makes milk production for Broken Glass both faster and more secure.
  • Tracking's Crossroads grants more opportunities to visit The Wild West for The Cowboy Shop, where you can get a Hammer, Potion, and Bucket for Broken Glass production. It also grants more opportunities for The Brothel, for use with Flask Of Mojo.
  • Tracking's Crossroads grants more opportunities for visiting The Engineering Shop and The ACME Shop, relevant for Hammer/Sheep/Hand Grenade/Pogo Stick and Transmute fodder. And it grants access to The Magic Shop for use with Potent Pixie Potion. And it grants access to the Pawn Shop for gaining Rupees with Turbulent Juice.
  • Feign Death can remove the Skip-A-Turn from a Holy Hand Grenade.
  • Transmute can dispose of junk items like Jinxed Jewel Of Encumberment, covering one of Ranger's weaknesses.

Merchant[edit | edit source]

  • Tracking's Crossroads grants more opportunities for The Wild West both for getting a Wanter Poster: Item (which Trade Routes allows to be completed more reliably and which Merchant wants for Rupees) or The Cowboy Shop.
  • Feign Death can be used to lose Skip-A-Turn from Hand Grenade/Explosive Sheep.
  • Purchase can create Living items with cooldowns, cooldowns which Pack Leader can reset.
  • For beating Crossroad's Archaeology Dig, Trade Routes and Crossroads' other events have many items you can buy to reliably beat the Dig.

Quantum Physicist[edit | edit source]

  • Tracking's Crossroads grants more opportunities for getting Flux fuel.
  • Feign Death can be used to ensure being unaffected by a death while exiting the Box.
  • Beast Mastery Talent activates any time you destroy a Living item with Flux, and the Living items themselves can be generated by Flux and Pack Leader.
  • Flux is fairly likely to create Living items with cooldowns, cooldowns which Pack Leader can reset.
  • For beating Crossroad's Archaeology Dig, Schrodinger's Box can beat the Cursed Gate. Multiversal Flux and Quantum Quality can give various helpful things for beating the Dig as well.

Time Twister[edit | edit source]

  • Lock Time can grant Rupees for use at shops led to by Tracking's Crossroads.
  • Bend Space and Lock Time spaces can trigger Tracking. With the Tracking Talent, this translates into kills for movement forward.
  • Not My Time Yet can work well with Ranger skills.
  • Crossroads and Pack Leader can allow for a stockpiling boost alongside Lock Time while Time Twister stalls.
  • For beating Crossroad's Archaeology Dig, Steady Progression can beat the Big Golem.

Warlock[edit | edit source]

  • Beast Mastery synergizes well with Call Demon, esp. because it allows for reviving yourself with Hellpriest; additionally, your Demons cannot be stolen since they will be Soulbound. The effect also notably allows the use of Darkcaller when a player targets you with Gun + Hypno. And the ability to use Aquatic Imp even while Disarmed allows countering Saboteur's "guaranteed" item destruction with Disarm + Highly Flammable + Fire.
  • Tracking's Crossroads grants more opportunities for charging at The Magic Shop for Harvest Power, for removing Call Demon's Curses at the Church, and for buying a Gun from The Wild West for killing with Demon Fairy.
  • Tracking's Crossroads grants more opportunities for attempting The Pyramid, with Hellpriest being used to revive you if you die (unless you've used up your Hellpriest(s) and can't summon another one from Call Demon, at which point you can Feign Death.)
  • Feign Death can be used right before death to Chaotic Power followed by revival in your Effects Phase.
  • Supposing you get a Mustache Of Life (or several from Pose Master's Mirror), you can use it on a Revive Wand/Orb/Staff for synergy with Beast Mastery or use it on a Skeleporter for synergy with Beast Mastery/Pack Leader/Feign Death. Positronic Enhancer can also work with Skeleporter or a magic item with the Mechanical enchantment (e.g. due to Buyback Bot.) Glibbonize is also particularly good for this in Wild Mode: Glitchy Glitchy.
  • Beast Mastery Talent activates for each Demon use.
  • Pack Leader Talent can transform Demons you don't want.
  • Tracking Talent allows kills for Skulls and forward movement. Can be triggered through precise Hornbeast usage and due to Curse Of Relativity from Call Demon.
  • Feign Death Talent and Skull Collector both reward killing (though Warlock Ranger may have trouble killing while Feigning Death outside of precise Hornbeast usage with the Tracking Talent.)
  • For beating Crossroad's Archaeology Dig, Chaotic Power can beat the Bearded Phantom and/or help with beating the Big Golem, Darkcaller can beat the Big Golem, and Call Demon/Ring Of Fire's Fire or a Hammer combined with Chaotic Fire's Oil into a Torch can beat the Dark Passage.
  • The Feign Death Talent has a loop with Duplicate Death Staffs that allows for an unlimited amount of kills without requiring an Effects Phase. Obtaining the essential items for the loop will be difficult, though the task seems possible in 10k+ games with Hammer Of Hephaestus. Assume all items with cooldowns have the Living enchantment:
  • 1. Use 2 Death Staffs for 2 Skulls.
  • 2. Feign Death
  • 3. Use 1 Death Staff for 1 Skull & to trigger Feign Death Talent, resetting all 3 Staffs.
  • 4. Use Harvest Power on 3 Skulls to gain Chaotic Energy.
  • 5. Use Chaotic Energy on Feign Death.
  • 6. Repeat steps 1-5 as many times as you want or until all (killable) enemy players are Dead.
  • Ideally, you will have Lilith's Staff.
  • Supposing you get Brahmastra, you can add it into the loop, ideally swapping out 1 Death Staff in either step 1 or 3 so that you have at least 1 piercing kill per rotation; this reduces the needed Death Staffs from 3 to 2. (Note that Brahmastra's placement in each rotation is flexible.)

Wordsmith[edit | edit source]

  • Supposing you gain a Cow (or Goat), it will become Soulbound, such that Tractor Beam, Lure Whistle, etc. cannot steal it. Additionally, Pack Leader can be used to reduce the cooldown of Cow (or Goat); this makes milk production for Blanks (from Glass Of Milk) both faster and more secure. Tracking even makes it easier to go to The Wild West and purchase a Bucket for this purpose.
  • Tracking's Crossroads can be used to access The Magic Shop for synergy with Lexicon's Blank generation.
  • Tracking's Crossroads can be used to access various shops (as well as other events like The Wild West's Wanted Posters) for items with specific letters to be bought, Split, and used for Composing.
  • Beast Mastery Talent activates any time you destroy a Living item with Split, and the Living items themselves can be generated by Compose and Pack Leader.
  • Compose can create Living items with cooldowns, cooldowns which Pack Leader can reset; Seal and Courier Flap are of particular interest.
  • For beating Crossroad's Archaeology Dig, Compose can create various helpful things for beating the challenges.
